Choosing Your First Dance

As an experienced wedding DJ in Kent, Andrew offers his advice for couples choosing their first dance.

The first dance marks the start of the evening party and is a prominent song choice for the happy couple. Here are some tips based on my experience to help you.

The most important thing is to consider which song you would like and for you both to agree on it. The song can mean something to you both or simply one that you both like. There are plenty of songs that work very well for the first dance and it doesn’t have to be a slow romantic dance either; an upbeat tune can work very well too. I’ve played a wide variety over the years including Bryan Adams, Michael Buble, Lonestar, Wannadies and Ed Sheeran. For more ideas check out my top tips for the first dance song.

It’s also worthwhile considering the time of your first dance. You don’t want to do it too early that your evening guests miss out but at the same time you don’t want to leave it too late that other guests start wandering. Generally, I find around 8pm works well, it gives everyone time to settle down after the meal and your guests will be starting to want to dance (hopefully).

If you’re not natural dancers, I’d recommend getting some dancing lessons. I did this for my wedding, and it was really beneficial as we ended up with a simple routine to save us just spinning around on the spot for several minutes. It also took our minds off being in the centre of the dancefloor by ourselves!

A final thought is for you to consider how long the song is and whether you want to be dancing by yourselves for the entire time. It can be a daunting experience as many couples aren’t professional dancers and used to being the centre of attention. If it’s a long song, you could have your guests join you halfway through. I always suggest leaving it at least a minute or two to allow your photographer to get some nice shots of you both together. And rather than having the DJ welcome everyone on, it can be a nice touch to have an agreed point when your parents and close friends will know to join you.
