Hi, I'm Richard

Firstly, Tell Us About Yourself

I live in Hawkhurst, Kent with my wife Leanne and our two children Sam and Annie. Spare time is rare, but when I do get some I enjoy a walk in the countryside, spending time with wider family, and cycling.

I grew up in rural Shropshire before moving to Kent ten years ago, and this is where my business name comes from – a tiny waterfall nestled in the Shropshire hills called The Lightspout.

Tell Us About Lightspout Films

I offer relaxed, unobtrusive wedding videography, and I try to capture the natural interactions between you and your guests on your wedding day. You’ve probably read the same from every other videographer, but it’s true: the best wedding videos are made by people just being themselves! A posed photo looks great, but video requires movement, and tells a story. I want to film the hugs, the laughter, the tears, the reunions, because they truly reflect the atmosphere of the day. As such, you hopefully won’t even notice me lurking in the background, capturing the true story of your wedding day.

When did you start Lightspout Films, how and why?

I filmed my first wedding in 2018. I’ve enjoyed still photography since childhood, and I even studied photography at A Level, but the videography bug didn’t take hold until I filmed and edited my wife and I’s honeymoon video in 2015. I enjoyed editing a few more holiday videos and even filmed a friend’s wedding on my GoPro, but it wasn’t enough. I needed more content, and I realised that wedding videography was what I wanted to do with my life.

P.S. Honeymoon and holiday videos still available on YouTube for the super keen!

What Products or Services do you offer?

I offer a feature-length package, including a one hour-plus film of your wedding, a 15-20 minute highlights video, and a one-song trailer version. Clips from your wedding day are set to music of your choice – either songs that mean a lot to you as a couple, or music from your wedding to really reflect the atmosphere of the day.

The highlights package is the same, except the ceremony and speeches are not filmed in full with audio. This package is perfect for budget-conscious couples, and the highlights video is great for sharing with family and friends.

Tell us about your Products or Services

I currently film weddings using a Canon DSLR with an 18-135mm lens. This gives me a wide range of zoom levels, for wide shots of your venue and tighter shots of your guests chatting and interacting. Using a still camera with video capabilities gives flexibility with great optics, to make your wedding video look just as beautiful as the real thing.

I also use Sony video cameras as static (tripod mounted) cameras to film multiple angles of the ceremony, speeches and first dance. This allows me to film both you and the reactions of your guests, and capture the emotion of the day.

What is your favourite?

I love making the one-song “trailer” version of your film. It’s a huge challenge to sum up an entire wedding in the space of 3 minutes or so, but it’s so worth it as this is the version that I think people will be most likely to show to family, friends and colleagues who don’t have time or opportunity to watch the highlights or feature length versions. I also like to think that couples thinking back on their wedding day will be able to spend just a few minutes watching it as a quick reminder of their special day.

What is your most popular?

Most couples choose the feature-length package, as it’s great to have a record of the wedding ceremony, and particularly the speeches!

How many people work with you?

I generally work on my own, but I offer the option to have a second videographer (subject to availability). This allows us to capture even more interactions and reactions throughout the day, for an even more rich and detailed wedding film.

Just for fun...

Your Favourite Season

My favourite season has to be spring. After a long cold winter, everything seems to be coming back to life, there are fresh lime green leaves on the trees, and for me it feels like coming out of hibernation. Plus, it’s the best weather for filming a wedding as it’s not too hot!

Your Favourite Colour

Generally it’s red, but when it comes to cars I like grey because you don’t have to wash them so often…

Your Favourite Animal

Tough call! I’m a big fan of a Giant Anteater, and I was lucky enough to do a feeding experience with one at Howlett’s Wild Animal Park a few years ago. However I also like a Pangolin, and it’s a (minor) dream of mine to see one in the flesh!

Testimonial For Lightspout Films

Cannot recommend enough, the preparation before the event was seamless and responded really quickly to any questions we had. On the day he arrived promptly and calmly got footage of getting ready without getting in the way (which in a tiny house full of 7 women and toddler is saying something!) The footage of the event was just breathtaking and the final product is something we will treasure forever. I never really thought about getting a videographer but this changed my mind for sure and being able to go back and see the moving images of the day and the people that were there is just everything.
